![]() ![]() A central strand in his academic work has been to probe the moral status of non-human animals, and he uses this autobiographical account of his relationship with the wolf to reassess the way most people think about the difference between humans and other creatures, reflecting on questions such as the nature of happiness and evil, the differences between ape intelligence and lupine intelligence, and perceptions of time, death and the meaning of life. What Rowlands sets about here is to explore ideas about the relationship between humans and other animals. If that sounds like a sappy Jonathan Livingston Seagull, it’s not: Rowlands is a a reputed professor of philosopher and a writer who thinks too deeply and probes accepted ideas too questioningly to produce something sloppy and sentimental. ![]() ![]() I recently finished reading The Philosopher And The Wolf: Lessons in Love, Death, and Happiness in which Mark Rowlands chronicles a decade in which he shared his life with a wolf he named Brenin, telling how he raised, lived with, and learned from the animal. ![]()

This remarkable achievement made Slocum the most famous North American sailor of all time.Īs a long-time consumer of recorded books, I’d rate Sailing Alone Around the World as one of the most enjoyable examples of the genre that I’ve ever encountered. His writing style is fast paced, witty, and exhilarating, an absorbing match to his harrowing adventures - adventures that included being chased by Moorish pirates off Gibraltar escaping a fleet of hostile canoes being submerged by a great wave off the Patagonian coast an encounter with Black Pedro, “the worst murderer in Tierra del Fuego” and foiling a nocturnal attack by savages by strewing carpet tacks on the Spray’s deck.Ĭaptain Joshua Slocum (1844–1909) was the first person to circle the globe alone entirely by sea. ![]() ![]() Whether Slocum was more accomplished as a writer or sailor is hard to say. Yet in her new novel, Our Missing Hearts, published in October by Penguin Press, Celeste Ng creates a dystopian setting that is a reminder of what is at stake, what we have to lose: “It started slowly at first, the way most things did,” she writes midway through the book. “Stranger than fiction” seems meaningless during a time - our time, now - when the unimaginable is a daily reality. ![]() Ravenous With Story: A Profile of Celeste Ng ![]() ![]() ![]() It might be slightly unfair to say, as does Richard Holmes in his magnificent biography, that parts of Shelley's Hymn To Intellectual Beauty and The Revolt of Islam suffer from a "thin, high-pitched egotism". Percy Bysshe Shelley, who qualified as a Romantic by the exacting test of expiring a month before his 30th birthday, became oceanic by dying in a tempest on the Mediterranean, had Byron as a mourner at his funeral pyre, and was in any case partly exempted from the latter's contempt by the otherwise extremely stormy career that he pursued. "There is a narrowness in such a notion," he wrote, "which makes me wish you'd change your lakes for ocean." ![]() Byron opened his Don Juan with a sparkling attack on the insipidity of those he termed – for fairly obvious reasons – "the Lakers", and scorned those who haunted Keswick as if it were some daunting wilderness.
